How to Make a Rapunzel Crown from Disney's Tangled

In this tutorial I show how to make a DIY Disney Rapunzel Crown. This is perfect for a Tangled themed birthday party or a Rapunzel Costume. All you need to make this DIY Disney Rapunzel Crown is some foam paper, felt, rhinestones, scissors, and hot glue. My daughter requested a Rapunzel birthday this year so I went to work making as many Rapunzel decorations, games, and accessories as I could think of in a short amount of time, like this Rapunzel Piñata

I didn’t make everything though, she really wanted a store bought Rapunzel Dress and this Tangled Rapunzel Wig that I let her pick out from Amazon, which was a blessing because if I had made that too, I would never have had enough time to finish everything for her party. They were both a very good price too for the quality. Although I did make some additions to the wig with braiding it and adding flowers in it, just like Rapunzel when she goes to the kingdom to fulfill her dream of seeing the floating lanterns. My daughter was so happy to dress like her favorite Princess for her birthday party. Read on to see how you can easily make this DIY Disney Rapunzel Crown too!

What you need:

  • 1 Craft Foam Paper in Gold or Glitter Gold (I got mine at Wal-mart for about $1.00
  • 1 Craft Foam Paper in White
  • 1 Felt Sheet in Purple
  • Rhinestones in Different Sizes and Colors
  • 20 Small Pearls
  • 1/2-inch Elastic
  • Scissors
  • Hot Glue
  • Optional: (Primer, I used this Primer here)
  • Optional: (Extra Fine Crystal Diamond Glitter)

The list looks long, but if you are a crafter like me, you’re likely to have most, if not all, these things at home!

Step 1:

Print The Rapunzel Crown Template out, and then cut it out. I just did a google image search, but this is the link to the template I used here. Place it on your Gold Foam Paper and tape or pins to keep in place and cut the template out.

*Note- I did not cut out the back piece from the template, I used elastic instead at the end.

Step 2:

Put the same template on the purple felt and cut. Hot glue it onto the back of the foam paper.

Step 3:

I did not have 3 big tear shaped rhinestones to put on the the crown, so I used white foam paper. Cut out the tear shaped “diamonds” from the template to size out of the white foam paper. I used this Primer here I had from painting projects, and painted it on the white foam paper “diamonds” and sprinkled this Extra Fine Crystal Diamond Glitter on them while the primer was still wet. I let it dry an hour while I worked on the next steps of the crown. I did a second coat of Primer after the first coat dried to give it a glossy look. You could also use clear nail polish if you don’t have primer on hand.

Step 4:

Time for the rhinestones! Make sure you have clear and multi-color flatback rhinestones in various sizes. Some will need to be very little! I had a little case of clear rhinestones in various sizes from previous projects that I believe I got at Michael’s, then I had a random bag I got at a second-hand store for $0.50 that happened to have the rest of the colors and sizes I needed, score! I also had a bag of leftover little pearls that were a good size for the flowers. Follow the design from the template you printed out as closely as you can and hot glue those rhinestones on. I started running low on the smallest rhinestones so I didn’t go over the tear-shaped diamond parts. Don’t worry about it being exact, unless someone is a die-hard Rapunzel fan with an eye for teeny tiny detail, no one will notice if it’s not precisely the same.Rapunzel Rhinestone

Step 5:

I had to put on my white foam paper “diamonds” before I finished the last couple of rhinestones I glued on just to see how much room I would be working with after they were on. I put some pieces of cotton ball underneath each “diamond” before gluing them to the crown to add some dimension. Then I added just a couple more rhinestones to finish it off.Finished Crown

Step 6:

Use your elastic to keep the crown on. Measure around the person’s head who is planning on wearing it from both ends of the crown. Make sure it is snug enough to stay on, but not too tight that it hurts. Hot glue the elastic on both ends of the crown.Elastic on Crown

YAY! All done! I actually did not take into account the wig that my daughter was going to wear when I measured just her head without the wig. So I ended up wearing it most of the night. I did, however, get a lot of compliments on it. It feels so awesome to have something you made yourself get complimented! So, if you are planning on wearing a wig, measure the elastic over the wig too! Although she ended up abandoning the wig at some point too.Lily Rapunzel Birthday

That’s all there is to it. Now you can make your daughter, or yourself, a Disney Rapunzel Princess too!DIY Rapunzel Crown
